Programme Note

More prosaically described as the Piano Trio in B-flat major, opus 97, Beethoven’s ‘Archduke’ Trio was composed in 1810 and 1811. The Trio was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, youngest child of the Holy Roman Emperor - Rudolph was bankrolling Beethoven at the time but, with a dozen pieces written in his honour, the Archduke got good value for money. 

Prior to this, in the first half of the concert, the Paddington Trio will perform a work by Ellen Lindquist that is dedicated to the beloved Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho and a composition by Ravel that mixes classical clarity with subtle experimentation.
