Having toured across the UK and internationally, the Villiers Quartet have been declared ‘one of the best young quartets around today’ (Jerry Horner, Fine Arts Quartet). The Quartet are winners of the 2015 Radcliffe Chamber Music Competition, and they are Quartet in Residence at the University of Oxford, 2015-2018 (incidentally succeeding the Cavaleri Quartet). They were the featured quartet on the soundtrack to the recent BBC One TV drama, Lady Chatterley's Lover.
For us they play string quartets by Schumann and Sibelius – masterpieces rather neglected by the Club in recent years. The rarity is the second quartet by the English composer Robert Still (1910-1971), which evinces ‘a lucidity, poise and outdoor folksy charm that are immediately endearing…. No praise can be too high for these sublimely articulated and concentrated readings by the Villiers Quartet, for whose leader, James Dickenson, the whole project was very much a labour of love’ (Andrew Achenbach, Gramophone, January 2015, reviewing the première recording of Still’s four quartets).
