Programme Note

Engelbert Humperdinck's charming overture to Hansel & Gretel leaves a tantalising trail of breadcrumbs towards the two musical masterpieces to follow:
Mendelssohn's effervescent and hugely popular Violin Concerto - with superb soloist Eloisa-Fleur Thom who is sure to impress with both the stunning virtuosity and soaring lyricism of her playing - and Mahler's 1st Symphony. From the astonishing opening, through the funeral march based on 'Frère Jacques' to the joyous finale, this symphony displays Mahler at his youthful and exuberant best.

There will be a retiring collection for Children's Hospice South West.
