Programme Note
James Lisney continues Endgame - a series of recitals exploring the notion of Late Style through the late piano music of Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin. Provocative, intriguing and endlessly satisfying piano music.
Schubert’s penultimate Sonata, D. 959 was completed in September 1828. Its andantino, a melancholic barcarolle, holds particular fascination due to the extraordinary upheaval at its heart: a storm, both of nature and temperament. Chopin’s rich Barcarolle, opus 60 has been called “the apotheosis of the nocturne”, a passionate Venetian love poem of the night. The subsequent Polonaise-fantaisie, opus 61 is a remarkable emanation of Chopin’s late style, a nationalistic meditation that is majestic and melancholic.
Beethoven’s Sonata in A flat, opus 110 is one of the most tightly integrated and celebrated works in the keyboard repertoire, displaying extraordinary tenderness and humanity. A sudden tragedy imposes upon the opening idyll; the conclusion represents a hard-fought triumph over this existential threat. An overwhelming experience.
“I have nothing but praise for James Lisney`s piano playing; he combines velvet touch and wide range of colour with complete understanding of phrasing and dynamic shading. This is someone who can really give the mechanical box of wires and wood a singing soul.” The Telegraph
