Programme Note

Britain’s best young violinist performs Elgar’s magnificent Violin Concerto! Thought to have been inspired by an affair with a close friend, the concerto contains some of Elgar’s most passionate and nostalgic music. Jennifer Pike, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2002, follows in a long line of distinguished violinists to have played the piece, including Yehudi Menuhin (conducted by Elgar himself), Albert Sammons and, more recently, Nigel Kennedy. This beautiful and deeply personal work follows two more English masterpieces: Elgar’s elegant Serenade for Strings, and Vaughan Williams’s serene 5th Symphony.
