Programme Note
The distinctive simplicity and hypnotic, mesmerising quality of the music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is deeply compelling and draws the listener in.
Celebrating the composer’s 80th birthday, Bristol Ensemble and the Choir of Royal Holloway perform an all-Pärt programme including Tabula Rasa (Clean Slate), the 1977 work that brought his music in the ‘holy minimalist’ style of tintinnabulation to a world-wide audience. Melodies slowly emerge and evolve, built on progressions that are almost mathematical yet exquisitely beautiful.
The programme includes two works from the same revolutionary period: the tranquil Spiegel im Spiegel (Mirror in the Mirror) and the 1977 minimalist masterpiece Fratres (Brothers), a set of variations on a theme of rich harmonic chord progressions, separated by a percussion motif.
To complete the programme, the Bristol Ensemble is joined by the Choir of Royal Holloway under the direction of conductor Rupert Gough to perform the luminous Te Deum.
