Programme Note
In this early evening concert, Exultate Singers presents an intriguing programme of choral music influenced by Greek sacred and secular culture and traditions.
The concert opens with a Byzantine chant by the 9th century abbess Kassiani. Inspired by the spirituality of Greek Orthodox chant, John Tavener’s celebrated Song of Athene and Eonia are mesmerising and serene, transporting the listener into a mystical sound world.
Nick Bicât is a celebrated film and TV composer in the USA and UK. In his Requiem he intersperses Greek epitaphs of ordinary people from across the centuries into the Latin Requiem text, creating a work that is both rhythmically exciting and deeply poignant.
English translations of Ancient Greek texts are set by the Irish composer Solfa Carlile in her three Byzantine hymns, Between Sea and Sky. The composer combines an Irish folk style with dramatic and vivid word painting that bring to life poems telling of journeys made long ago across the Aegean sea.
The rising star composer Toby Young has written several pieces for Exultate Singers to great acclaim. His Greek Love Songs receive their world premiere in this concert, contrasting many choral styles and emotions.
Come and join us for an ecstatic evening of Greek musical wonders.
