Programme Note

Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony was a modern and light-hearted take on the symphonies of Haydn and other classical greats. It is full of vitality and energy which contrasts with the turmoil of the Russian Revolution – the work was composed in 1917 – and acts as a fresh and lively foil to the other works in the programme.

Beethoven was composing  his 5th Piano Concerto during a period of war and political upheaval as Napoleon’s forces threatened Vienna. The dramatic and heroic qualities of the concerto, and its title ‘Emperor’,  are surely a reflection of these turbulent times.

Mozart wrote the 40th symphony at a time when he was facing huge personal and financial challenges.  It was rare for Mozart to choose a minor key for his symphonies, and it adds to the dramatic tension and emotional intensity of one of his greatest masterpieces.

Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra is delighted to continue its long and creative partnership with Catherine Larsen-Maguire and is pleased to work with Welsh pianist Llyr Williams for the first time. His recent Schuman album was described in the Guardian as ‘unquestionably thoughtful, authoritative playing’.
