Programme Note

Virtuoso violinist Thomas Bowes resumes his fruitful collaboration with bhco to perform one of the giants of the romantic violin repertoire, the concerto by Brahms. This mature work, both symphonic in its scale and refined in its chamber music style of instrumental writing, is framed by works of precocious composers near the beginnings of their careers. Mozart’s overture Il Re Pastore is the curtain-raiser and Mendelssohn’s ‘Scottish’ symphony concludes the evening in which conductor Eduardo Portal, an emerging talent on the international concert scene, makes his debut with bhco.

“What is so impressive about Bowes as a soloist is not just his technical assurance, his flawless intonation over the widest range, tonal and dynamic, but his natural feeling for warmly romantic expressiveness…” GRAMOPHONE MAGAZINE
