Programme Note

The rich harmonies and novel instrumentation of Vaughan Williams’ Tallis Fantasia (double string orchestra and solo string quartet) are a string player’s delight. In the Sinfonia Concertante, Mozart scores for a double viola section in his orchestra, creating a glowing central sonority to the ensemble’s support of the soloists’ eloquent dialogue, whilst the sublime radiance of Fauré’s Requiem is garnered in no small part by its scoring which again includes double violas!  bhco is delighted to be working once again with Bristol’s leading choir, Exultate Singers.

Conductor Andrew Shulman and long-term collaborator with bhco returns with fellow soloists from the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra to direct this concert which is being performed in memory of David Nash. David was a leading light of the orchestra’s development, not only from his position as principal viola, but also as Chairman – hence the viola-rich programme drawn from some of his favourite works!

David had a strong association with Arup in his professional life as a Civil Engineer and we are extremely grateful to them for their generous support of tonight’s concert.
