Programme Note
Marking the exact 400th anniversary of the death of Orlando Gibbons on 5 June 1625, the Parish of Esher is pleased to present a harpsichord recital featuring keyboard music by Gibbons, Byrd, Tomkins and their contemporaries in Jacobean England.
This will be a unique opportunity to honour the multi-centenary of arguably the first great Anglican composer at one of the few churches to have actually been built during the English Reformation, the Tudor-era Old St George’s Church in Esher.
Yat-Soon's programme will also explore the music of Gibbons' younger Jacobean contemporaries in an age of changing musical styles and historical upheavals. These include his son Christopher Gibbons, who towards the end of his long career taught the young Henry Purcell, thereby providing a tangible sense of continuity in English music which stretches from the Elizabethan to the late Stuart eras.
There will also be music by William Lawes and Bulstrode Whitelock, two men who were friends and colleagues in early life, but who went on be on opposing sides in the British Civil Wars of the 1640s.
The concert will last around an hour without interval.
Free entry with retiring collection; light refreshments served after the performance.
