How did people sing 500 years ago? What choral sounds could be heard ringing across Scotland, the Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal?
Come to the Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh and hear The Scottish Chamber Choir explore the musical repertoire of the Renaissance and the Reformation.
This concert traces the musical response to Lent and Easter in the 16th and 17th centuries: from the earthy psalm settings in Scots which were sung in kirks all over the country; through the vivid and sparkling, yet still intensely human, choral music of the Low Countries; celebrating the heavenly achievements of the great Italian church composers; and exploring the eccentric and dramatic word painting of the early Baroque masters.
A delicious journey of discovery is punctuated with much-loved works by Lotti, Palestrina, Byrd and Gesualdo. But prepare to be surprised by a psalm setting in 16th century French by a Dutch composer, a luminous motet ostensibly written by the king of Portugal (but probably not), and an eloquent Stabat Mater written by a very wealthy nun.
