Programme Note

This year sees the 150th anniversary of the birth of the leading English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Music-at-Hill Concert Society is pleased to be able to mark the actual week of Vaughan Williams' 150th birthday with a special celebratory concert as part of its Friday lunchtime series.

We shall welcome the chamber ensemble Vita Nova to perform a programme featuring two of Vaughan Williams' orchestral suites, the English Folk Song Suite and the Charterhouse Suite, coupled with an attractive work by the early 20th century English composer Walter Leigh, whose life and composing career was cut tragically short by his death during the Second World War aged just 36.  Leigh's Concertino for Keyboard and String Orchestra is the piece for which he is probably best known, and deserves more frequent airings than it receives.

Do join us for what should be a wonderful programme full of mellifluous English melodies!

Refreshments are available both before and after the concert, from the churchyard coffee stall and from our own welcome desk inside the church.
