Programme Note

Jonathan Sage on basset clarinet with the Keats String Quartet

Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A was originally written for the warm, rich tones and extended range of the basset clarinet, a long-forgotten instrument which was revived in the twentieth century, notably by the virtuoso clarinettist Alan Hacker, whose brilliant reconstruction of Mozart’s original score opens this commemorative concert in his honour. It is paired with a new work, TITLE, written for the basset clarinet, and dedicated to one of its greatest champions, by the distinguished Irish composer Garrett Sholdice. Takings from the concert will be donated to Save the Children in Alan’s memory.
