Programme Note
Mark van de Wiel
As principal clarinet of the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta and the London Chamber Orchestra, and much in demand as a soloist, Mark van de Wiel has performed at major venues throughout the world. Known especially for his interest in contemporary music, he has given several London premieres of new works, including Boulez’s Domaines at the 2015 Proms, and the world premiere of a concerto by the Dutch composer, Michel van der Aa, which was commissioned for him by the London Sinfonietta. Last autumn he gave the London premiere at the Royal Festival Hall of a concerto by the British composer Joseph Phibbs, which he had commissioned jointly with the Philharmonia and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. His discography includes a recent recording of the concerto by the Danish composer Nielsen with the Philharmonia under Paavo Järvi.
As a chamber musician, Mark has been the clarinettist with the Endymion ensemble, which is dedicated to contemporary chamber music, since its formation in 1979. Among the leading players with whom he has collaborated in chamber performances are Vladimir Ashkenazy, Pascal Rogé, Geoffrey Parsons, Elizabeth Leonskaja, Kate Royal and the Brodsky Quartet.
Also a distinguished teacher, Mark is a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, clarinet professor for the I,Culture Orchestra (an ensemble for young musicians mainly from Eastern Europe) and the British Isles Music Festival. He gives masterclasses worldwide.
Mark studied at Merton College, Oxford, and the Royal College of Music, before being appointed successively principal clarinettist with Welsh National Opera and with Glyndebourne Touring Opera. He has an honorary doctorate from the University of Northampton, where he was born and grew up.
