Programme Note

Tredici marks its 20th Anniversary by joining forces with Orpheus Baroque and six first-class soloists for a performance of Bach’s St John Passion sung in German.

Along with its later counterpart as told by St Matthew, but more dramatic, anguished and bruising, this Passion Oratorio is a perfect synthesis of narrative, commentary and contemplation which it is impossible to experience without a profound sense of catharsis.

To believers and non-believers alike, it is the interweaving of musical, verbal, spiritual and psychological counterpoint which makes the St John Passion one of western culture’s greatest legacies.

We do hope you will join us to celebrate 20 years of music-making with Tredici.
