Programme Note
Come and enjoy an orchestral evening in the inspiring surroundings of St James's Church in Paddington, with the opportunity to compare and contrast works written by three composers in the early stage of their musical output - the renowned 19th century German composer Johannes Brahms and two living composers based in London and Surrey respectively.
Brahms is represented by his delightful A major Serenade, completed in 1859 when the composer was in his mid-twenties. The young London-based composer Elliot Teo's vigorous Guitar Concerto will grip the listener with its striking textures and sonorities. Meanwhile, Surrey-based Philip Pike has turned to composing late in life, following a career in the City of London, and his Unemployment Symphony (of which we shall hear the first movement) in the dark key of C minor is full of drama and emotion.
The concert will have an interval, with light refreshments available.
