Programme Note
Haydn's Nelson Mass stands as one the composer's most popular and enduring works. Composed in 1798 for the Estherhazy family, the mass (originally titled Missa in Angustiis - 'Mass for troubled times') gradually became known as the Nelson Mass, thanks to Austrian relief at Lord Nelson's halting of Napoleon's progress across Europe. The music - full of colour, joy and vitality - remains a hugely entertaining example of Haydn's finest choral writing.
Alexander L'Estrange's Ahoy! present a different naval scene - one of pirates, lost-loves and drunken sailors! Written to commemorate the anniversary of the raising of the famous Tudor warship the Mary Rose, L'Estrange's choral suite features Tudor music, folk songs and sea shanties which illuminate stories of derring-do (and don't) on the high seas. Tonight's performance is the culmination of Voices of London's 2018 education project and features young singers from across London who have taken part in workshops and concerts led by the Festival's education team.
