Programme Note
Described by the conductor Robert Shaw as “the most remarkable musical allegory of human existence”, Bach’s Mass in B Minor has been likened to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling and Shakespeare’s Sonnets.
This monumental work was, however, likely never performed in its entirety during the composer’s lifetime, with the first complete public performance taking place more than 100 years after his death. Considered Bach’s final great achievement, the Mass in B Minor has since come to be regarded as the pinnacle of grand choral composition.
Petros Singers are delighted to welcome a line up of world-class soloists, alongside our regular collaborators The Garter Ensemble.
