Programme Note
Since its inaugural concert at St John’s in 2017, London Mozart Players’ annual community concert has welcomed top classical stars to SE19 including Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Nicola Benedetti and Michael Collins. In 2022 this eagerly anticipated concert will host another virtuoso soloist, 15-year-old Leia Zhu, who will perform Mozart’s graceful and enchanting third violin concerto.
Now a teenager, violinist Leia Zhu made her solo debut at the age of four. Since then, she has performed with orchestras around the world, and will play Tchaikovsky’s notably challenging violin concerto at Fairfield Halls in October 2021 with LMP, (to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3). Her awe-inspiring talent will shine through Mozart’s graceful and witty writing in this sublime concerto, which displays the serene melodic perfection evident in all Mozart’s works. The concert also includes Coleridge-Taylor’s Four Novelletten, a brilliantly-crafted series of four dance-like pieces for strings, tambourine, and triangle, that recalls the elegance of Elgar and the lyricism of Dvorak.
At the heart of LMP’s residency at St John’s is the desire to inspire young people and widen the reach of classical music. This vision is the foundation for this community concert, which has been sponsored to enable young music students, or those who do not normally go to concerts due to financial or health reasons, get the chance to experience the transformative power of classical music. A limited number (100) of tickets are also available to purchase, so don’t delay in booking! Buying your ticket will ensure that someone less fortunate has the opportunity to attend.
This is an amazing opportunity to experience live classical music from this internationally celebrated chamber orchestra and its very special young guest, who is surely an inspiration for every fledgling and aspiring musician.
