Programme Note
Brahms' Symphony no. 4 is a profound masterpiece blending classical structure with intense romanticism. Its four movements showcase deep emotional struggle and intricate development, culminating in a powerful passacaglia finale (variations over a repeating bass line) inspired by Bach, making it a complex, yet beloved work, exploring themes from sombre nobility to fiery intensity.
We have paired this with Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto — a vibrant, virtuosic work known for its dramatic flair, seamless transitions between movements and interplay between piano and orchestra. It culminates in an energetic finale reflecting her journey from child prodigy to mature artist, blending personal expression with the era's Romantic style.
