The evening will feature a world première performance of Cecilia McDowall’s Cavatina at Midnight, specially arranged for this recital. The concert begins with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Variations in B minor, arranged for bassoon and piano, highlighting his distinctive blend of classical and African-American musical elements. This is followed by Benjamin Britten’s Six Metamorphoses after Ovid, a lyrical and evocative suite for solo oboe. Gordon Jacob’s Partita for solo bassoon showcases the composer’s playful and skillful handling of the instrument. The highlight of the evening is the world première of Cecilia McDowall’s Cavatina at Midnight, an exquisite new work for oboe, bassoon, and piano. The programme continues with Malcolm Arnold’s light-hearted Sonatina for oboe and piano, followed by a selection of songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, including Silent Noon, Let Beauty Awake, and Orpheus with His Lute, which blend lyrical poetry and rich harmonies. Elizabeth Maconchy’s Ophelia’s Song adds a touch of drama, inspired by Shakespeare’s tragic heroine. The evening concludes with Madeleine Dring’s delightful Trio for oboe, bassoon, and piano, an energetic and charming finale.
