Programme Note
Prompted by the example of Frank Martin - who kept his searing Mass for Double Choir hidden for forty years, regarding it as a matter between himself and God - Londinium explores music which springs from a bedrock of Christian faith. Superb works by Pärt, Bruckner, Hildegard of Bingen, Messiaen, Stravinsky, and Harvey are heard alongside James MacMillan's affirmative Who shall separate us?, commissioned for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. Crowning our programme, and marking 400 years since the composer's death, are magisterial motets by William Byrd, whose music defiantly proclaimed his Catholic faith in Elizabethan England.
Wine will be served in the interval.
