Programme Note
Join London City Orchestra for the third of our 'Four Elements' season and enjoy a lively programme of earth-inspired pieces.
The concert opens with Janacek’s “The Cunning Little Vixen Suite”, the opera’s first act reworked for orchestra. The tale is one of a vixen Sharp-Ears living surrounded by forest, nature and faune. Sharp-Ears is captured by a forester, but then flees after bringing much disruption to its fellow captivity companions.
The concert continues and ends with the wonderful Symphony Number 4 by Mahler, centred around a song composed earlier by Mahler, “Das himmlische Leben”, which presents a child’s vision of Heaven. The symphony explores several deep topics such as nature, mountains, animals, humanity, love, life and death. The second movement depicts the contrast between Earth and hell, and is followed by a beautiful finale exploring the contrast between Earth and heaven.
