Programme Note

Our next concert profiles one of the most fascinating teacher/pupil relationships in recent British musical history. Arthur Oldham became Britten’s only private pupil at Aldeburgh between 1945 and 1951. Despite the successes he enjoyed in the following years and a number of high-profile commissions, Oldham’s own output as a composer is now largely forgotten.Britten had recently completed his Serenade for Tenor Horn & Strings when Oldham arrived at Aldeburgh, and it was shortly after he left 6 years later that Oldham penned his large-scale Laudes Creaturarum. These two substantial pieces will be performed alongside a selection of shorter works by both composers as we explore their creative output and links.
