Programme Note

Alban Berg is one of the little known geniuses of the early twentieth century. A man who spent most of his early years writing beautifully lyrical songs, unpublished and therefore virtually unknown to the public, he earned notoriety for publishing just over a dozen pieces in his entire, short, lifetime, most of whom are among the most complex works of music ever composed. His Kammekonzert is definitely among his top compositions, steeped in symbolism, musical references and symmetry that were so dear to him and to his mentor, Arnold Schönberg. And yet nothing in Berg’s music is sheer logic and mathematical precision. In the intricate maze of serial rows, musical instantiations of composers’ names and proportions, one has the feeling of an overarching lyrical spirit that is able to transport us to the atmosphere of that most dramatic time of history: the European interwar period.

Guests soloists and conductors for this piece are Hungarian-American pianist Julia Hamoś and Leonard Elschenbroich respectively, who join forces with Fidelio Orchestra’s concertmaster Jaga Klimaszewska.
