Programme Note
The 2019/20 the London Mozart Players’ Piano Explored lunchtime series celebrates the 70th birthday of its Conductor Laureate Howard Shelley with a selection of his favourite piano concertos demonstrating his flair and breadth of virtuosity. Take the opportunity to revel in the classics or discover something new, all in a whistle-stop lunch hour!
Mozart’s magnificent C major piano concerto has something of a Beethovian air about it – certainly Beethoven references it in his own Fourth Piano Concerto, and the famous motif of his Fifth Symphony can also be heard. There’s lots to love in this, the longest and perhaps the most virtuosic of Mozart’s piano concertos: a touching slow movement, a march reminiscent of the then unwritten ‘Le Marseillaise’ and an animated finale with its gavotte theme from Idomeneo.
These popular lunchtime concerts, now in their sixth season, include an insightful deconstruction of the piece by Howard Shelley, followed by a full performance of the work by Howard with the London Mozart Players.
‘Shelley is a superb musician: not only does he play with great taste and insight but his conducting is impeccable’ BBC Music Magazine
