Programme Note
One of the world’s most virtuosic professional choirs, Tenebrae, presents a programme celebrating some of the finest exponents of American choral music. These works demonstrate the variety of choral composition taking place in America from the twentieth century onwards. Works by Paulus, Thompson, Schoenberg and Whitacre complement Copland’s evocative In the Beginning. The chamber version of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalmsis only right to be the closing work in this programme, the full orchestral version of which Tenebrae is thrilled to have released on disc with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nigel Short, to mark Bernstein’s centenary anniversary in 2018.
“You couldn’t have asked for a better performance; plush choral sound, heartfelt solos… rich contributions from the Aurora Orchestra and all immaculately sculpted by Short.” The Times
“Under Short’s direction, Tenebrae and the instrumentalists from the Aurora Orchestra matched each other in high quality.”The Financial Times
