Programme Note
Lewisham Choral Society and Vox Next Gen present baroque masterpieces by Handel and Purcell. Our main work is Handel’s Dixit Dominus. In 9 movements and set for a 5-part choir and 5 soloists, this is surely one of Handel’s most spectacular works.
Purcell’s Funeral Sentences, written in 1695, were first performed at the funeral of Queen Mary II. These exquisite Anglican prayer settings evoke an intimate conversation between Purcell and God. “Thou knowest Lord the secrets of our hearts” was performed at his own funeral later that year.
Handel’s Coronation Anthems have remained a firm favourite with choirs and audiences over the centuries. Let the walls of St John’s resound to Zadok the Priest!
