Programme Note
Prokofiev said that his Fifth Symphony embodied ‘the greatness of the human spirit’. Premiered in 1945 with World War II raging and the sound of artillery disturbing the concert, the piece is defiantly optimistic and one of the composer’s most popular works.
The concert opens with two works depicting Cornwall: Bax’s Tintagel is inspired by the ancient castle and by the composer’s personal romantic turmoil, while Arnold’s Cornish Dances evoke the ancient county through its people and landscapes.
