Performers

Roy Wales – Conductor

English Concert Orchestra
English Concert Singers and Chorus

Programme Note

This performance provides a rare opportunity to experience Handel's brilliant descriptive oratorio, Israel in Egypt.

Written in one inspired month in late 1738, Handel uses biblical texts from the book of Exodus and from the Psalms. He describes in graphic musical language the story of the plagues sent by God on the Egyptians and also Moses leading the Israelites from captivity in Egypt through the Red Sea.

The chorus is predominant throughout with many double choruses. Handel's musical description of the flies, frogs and hailstones in the plagues is memorable and the impressive charge of the horse and his rider through the Red Sea provides one of the most dramatic sequences in all of Handel's oratorios.

This is a performance not to be missed!
