Programme Note
Dido and Aeneas is Purcell’s single most famous work. Familiar to audiences long before the rediscovery in recent decades of Monteverdi and Handel, it is also the best-known opera to have been composed before Mozart. Based on the love story from Virgil’s Aeneid, this English baroque tragic masterpiece features magnificent music, potent drama, and remarkable intensity.
