Programme Note
Carefully crafted by the acclaimed saxophonist Huw Wiggin, this programme offers a fabulous range of music for saxophone and piano, selected to show exactly what the instrument has to offer in its many different guises. Highlighting the versatility of the instrument and embracing the many different musical styles to which it can adapt, this concert will provide a highly enjoyable afternoon of music!
Huw Wiggin is particularly known for his playing of the soprano saxophone and the concert features two composers from the Baroque period: JS Bach and Benedetto Marcello. The saxophone was invented in Dinant, Belgium and many pieces in the repertoire are therefore of French or Belgium influence; this is reflected in the inclusion of music by Jules Demersseman and also Paule Maurice’s Tableaux de Provence, which atmospherically captures each mood of the composer’s experiences whilst living there as a child.
The influence of Jazz is shown both in the last movement of Edison Denisov’s Sonata and in the work of Takashi Yoshimatsu in the evocative second movement of the Fuzzy Bird Sonata. The concert closes with a flourish: Pequena Czarda by Spanish composer Pedro Iturralde.
