Programme Note
Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass is a symphonic mass for chorus and string orchestra. The four movements are titled The Spheres, Sunrise, The City and Identity, but feature the Latin mass text.
Gjeilo says of the piece “I wanted the musical development of the Mass to evolve from transparent and spacey, through increasing emotion and movement, to something solid and grounded – as a metaphor for human development from child to adult, for a spiritual journey, or for the creative process itself.”
Preceding this spiritual journey is Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending - voted by Classic FM listeners as the UK’s favourite classical work. Here it is performed as Martin Gerigk’s beautiful 2018 arrangement for strings.
The outstanding Civil Service Choir has delighted capacity audiences at St John’s Smith Square with fine performances of Schubert’s two Stabat Maters, Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor, Beethoven’s Mass in C and other large scale works. This is no ordinary work place choir.
