Programme Note
The Arcubus Ensemble together with the trebles of the Schola Cantorum from Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School present an innovative concert of choral works from across the centuries representing the soul's journey from the innocence of birth and joyful wonder of life to its ultimate destination in the tranquil paradise of Heaven. From William Byrd's resplendent treatment of Psalm 150 to Arvo Pärt's setting of the Genealogy of Christ from St Luke's Gospel, the first half of the programme is a celebration of life culminating in a newly commissioned work by composer-in-residence, Russell Hepplewhite, entitled Endless Time setting poetry by Rabindranath Tagore. John Sheppard’s haunting masterpiece, Media Vita, then introduces Hepplewhite’s setting of the Christina Rossetti poem, Paradise: In a Dream before Sir John Tavener’s ethereal Svyati for choir and cello solo brings the journey to a celestial close.
