Mahler and Wagner

Add to my Calendar 17-11-2018 19:30 17-11-2018 21:30 36 Fulham Symphony Orchestra 60th Anniversary Concert Join us for the first concert in our 60th Anniversary Season.  Mahler’s First Symphony is a thrilling journey, right from its spellbinding opening moments. Along the way he evokes the sounds of nature, a street band, klezmer and even a solemn Frère Jacques. Concluding with a joyful finale, this monumental work bears out Mahler’s conviction that “a symphony must be like the world: it must embrace everything”. The second half of the concert is devoted to well-known orchestral excerpts from Götterdämmerung, the final opera of Wagner’s epic Ring cycle. Beginning with the radiant Dawn music and Siegfried’s Rhine Journey, it will also include the poignant scene of Siegfried’s Death and the ensuing Funeral March. The concert ends with Zoe South singing the role of Brünnhilde in the final Immolation Scene, one of the most dramatic and expansive solos in all of opera. Described by Wagner News as “phenomenal” and “awe-inspiring” in the role of Brünnhilde, Zoe South has also sung the roles of Ortrud in Lohengrin (for The Wagner Society/Meistersingers), Kundry in Parsifal, Leonore in Fidelio, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Ariadne in Ariadne auf Naxos, and the title role in Puccini’s Turandot.
