Programme Note

Following acclaimed performances of Christmas Oratorio, St John PassionMass in B minor and St Matthew Passion, and a highly successful Autumn tour to Leipzig, Anton Bruckner Choir and founder conductor Christopher Dawe return to St John’s Smith Square to complete their Bach odyssey. Fittingly the cycle concludes with the Magnificat in D, a microcosm of Bach’s choral music that packs into a scintillating half hour the full gamut of emotions, ranging from dazzling trumpet-led celebration to intensely felt spiritual intimacy. By way of contrast Mozart’s swansong, Requiem provides an opportunity to explore a range of darker colours within the overall spectrum of D major/minor, the sombreness of Mozart’s characteristic tragic key underlined with a rich scoring that draws on the imposing heft of trombones and basset horns.

Anton Bruckner Choir is delighted to be joined in its 25th anniversary year by a team of outstanding young soloists and to collaborate once more with the London Mozart Players, ideal partners for the evening’s traversal of high Baroque and Classical styles.
