Programme Note

If you love the rich tones and harmonies of Russian music you should come to hear Rachmaninov’s Vespers (All-night Vigil), which contains some of the most deeply moving, reflective choral music ever written.

Although known popularly, but incorrectly as the Vespers, the All-Night Vigil is actually a setting of the services of Vespers, Mattins and the First Hour within the Russian Orthodox Church. It was composed over two weeks in 1915, with Russia at war and on the brink of disintegration. After initial acclaim it fell out of favour when the new Russian revolutionary government condemned all religious music. Thankfully it has emerged again to become one of the most popular works of all time.

Hertfordshire Chorus under their inspirational musical director David Temple, are renowned for their inovative programming of music by contemporary composers and their original treatment of classical works. Their programme will be supplemented with three popular a cappella pieces: O Quam Gloriosum (Victoria), Plorate Filii Israel (Carissimi) and Beati Quorum Via (Stanford).
