Programme Note
Giovanni Gabrieli has become well known to concert audiences as the leading composer of the Venetian High Renaissance. It is unsurprising that Gabrieli’s music should have drawn such attention: it is of the most exquisite quality, and the large-scale polychoral pieces are so wonderfully evocative of the architecture of St Mark’s Basilica, where he was employed as organist for the majority of his career.
