Programme Note
Award Winning Soprano Jennifer Witton joins Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra with Conductor Graham Ross to perform Richard Strauss's immensely moving life reflections: Vier letzte Lieder. Written when he was 84, Strauss enjoyed a devotion to Lieder throughout his life and wrote over 200 deeply expressive songs. First performed eight months after the composer’s own passing, the soaring vocal lines and surging harmonies serve as an enduring depiction of spiritual triumph over death.
“It sends shivers down my spine”, wrote Gustav Mahler after a performance of his First Symphony in 1896. Beginning with barely audible whispers of a spring dawn, there follows music that seems to have escaped from a Jewish wedding, a Viennese café, an uncanny funeral and an Alpine village dance. This much loved work presents us with a complex web of musical themes which influenced Mahler during his early life.
