A Feast of Baroque and Classical Music by Candelight

Part of the Chobham Festival 2023

Add to my Calendar 14-10-2023 19:45 14-10-2023 21:45 36 Bach & Sons at Chobham Festival An evening featuring not just one, but a trio of composers from the greatest family dynasty in western music. The programme opens and closes with works by the patriarch of the Bach family, Johann Sebastian. Carl Philipp Emanuel was the second surviving son from Bach's first marriage to Maria Barbara. He was a major figure in the musical life of northern Germany in the late 1700s. The eighteenth child, born to Anna Magdalena, was Johann Christian, known as the London Bach, having settled in Britain. He was an early and prolific composer of symphonies and a major influence on Mozart. The programme also includes a concerto originally attributed to JC Bach, but now widely considered to have more likely been written much later by Frenchman Henri Casadesus. Its more romantic style provides a contrast to the dominant baroque and classical sound of the evening. Chobham Festival Musical Director is again gathering a select group of musicians for the Festival Orchestra, which will be conducted from the violin. Violin soloist Tim Callaghan has been associated with Chobham Festival almost since its beginning nearly 30 years ago. He is co-principal of Guildford-based Southern Pro Musica. Oboe and viola soloists Helen Barker and Mike Briggs were also both making return visits to the festival. As a soloist and orchestral player oboeist Helen has performed with, among others, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the London Soloists Chamber Orchestra. She teaches at the Royal College of Music and is principal oboe for the Southern Pro Musica. Mike Briggs is a member of the BBC Concert Orchestra. He has also played for the BBC Philharmonic, Northern Sinfonia, Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Bath Phil, Oxford Phil, and various West End and touring shows. Cellist Ben Rogerson plays with the London Mozart Players, the City of London Sinfonia, and is part of a quartet of four cellists called the Cellophonics in addition to his position as a cellist with the BBC Concert Orchestra.
