Programme Note
This concert will be the Sam Laughton's final concert with the orchestra. Sam has presided over a golden decade with the Camerata during which it has progressed through a broadening repertoire to ever higher standards.
This concert is characterised by beginnings and endings. The programme includes the first and last symphonies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: His symphony No. 1 was written in 1764 at the age of eight. His magnificent final symphony No. 41 - The masterpiece 'Jupiter' - was composed 24 years later, just three years before his death.
We also welcome to the concert the celebrated violinist Alexandra Caldon for a performance of the ever-popular Mendelssohn Violin Concerto.
The Chiltern Camerata perhaps needs little introduction: Founded in 1996, this chamber orchestra of music professionals and advanced amateurs presents innovative and attractive concerts in and around the Chilterns and Thames Valley.
Sam Laughton has been the orchestra's Director of Music since 2009. During his term of office, which concludes with this concert, he has overseen a golden decade in which he has enabled the orchestra to broaden its repertoire and raise the standard of it music-making.
ALEXANDRA Caldon has studied with Erich Gruenberg, Peter Hanson and Sophie Langdon, and is now working in London. In 2010 she was appointed No. 3 Second Violin with Britten Sinfonia, with whom she has toured the UK and abroad. She is also very active in our Creative Learning work, particularly with Britten Sinfonia Academy.
Alexandra has also worked with the London Sinfonietta (including a performance at last year’s BBC Proms) and plays frequently with the London Chamber Orchestra.
