Conducted by Calum Fraser, this special summer concert traces a musical journey from Handel’s Baroque splendour to the powerful twentieth-century works of Ralph Vaughan Williams. The programme opens with Handel’s magnificent Zadok the Priest, composed for the coronation of George II and performed at every British coronation since. Other highlights include Charles Wood’s radiant O Thou the Central Orb, Howard Goodall’s much-loved setting of The Lord is my Shepherd, familiar to many from The Vicar of Dibley, Edgar Bainton’s beautiful And I Saw a New Heaven, and Parry’s stirring coronation anthem, I Was Glad. Following the interval, the choir performs Vaughan Williams’ moving masterpiece Dona Nobis Pacem, a compelling plea for peace that combines Latin liturgy, biblical texts and the poetry of Walt Whitman in one of the most powerful choral works of the twentieth century. Featuring soprano Emily Wishart, baritone Ian Gillis and organist Lucy Morrell, this concert showcases one of South London’s leading choirs in the beautiful setting of St Leonard’s Church. Founded in 1921, Streatham Choral continues to delight audiences with ambitious repertoire and vibrant performances. St Leonard’s Church, London DD/MM/YYYY
