Programme Note
Gabriel Fauré wrote his Requiem "for pleasure, if I can call it that!". After the première in Paris in 1888, the priest-in-charge memorably told Fauré that "we do not need these novelties". Fauré’s Requiem is now regarded as one of the gems of 19th-century French music, and St Luke’s, Chelsea as one of the gems of 19th-century British architecture: the performance of one inside the other is always a special event.
The Choir of St Luke’s Chelsea will be joined by Come & Singers to celebrate Michaelmas with a performance of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, finishing on a glorious high with Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. Conducted by Jeremy Summerly with the Chelsea Camerata and Rupert Jeffcoat on the organ. Concert entry is free with a retiring collection.
