Add to my Calendar 26-06-2018 19:30 26-06-2018 21:30 36 Spem in alium by candlelight In this final concert of our current season, we bring you a programme of inspiring anthems spanning five centuries.Thomas Tallis’ monumental 40 part motet Spem in alium takes centre stage, accompanied by other jewels of Tudor polyphony, including Thomas Tomkins' When David Heard and Orlando Gibbons' O Clap Your Hands, to name just two.The origins of Tallis' motet are obscure with the earliest surviving manuscripts being those prepared in 1610 for the investiture of James I's son, Henry Frederick, as Prince of Wales. Set for eight choirs of five voices, it is a work of immense power and great effect, and is a season highlight for any choir to perform. The second half of our programme sets a number of 20th century classics - William Walton’s The Twelve and Edgar Bainton's And I Saw a New Heaven - and contemporary works including Judith Weir’s Two Human Hymns, Will Todd’s Vidi Speciosam and Ed Rex’s 10-part Hymn to the Night.We look forward to welcoming you to the candlelit splendour of this beautiful church for an evening of truly memorable music.
