Programme Note
Join Ad Libitum for an evening of stirring 20th century choral music with organ, harp and percussion. Two American composers, Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber, are featured alongside the Hungarian composer, Zoltan Kodaly. Leonard Bernstein — of West Side Story fame — described his exciting and jazzy Chichester Psalms as 'the most accessible, B-flat majorish tonal piece I’ve ever written'. Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei is based on his familiar and poignant composition, Adagio for Strings. Kodaly composed the Missa Brevis while sheltering in the basement of the Budapest Opera House as the Russian Army besieged Nazi-occupied Budapest: come and hear this haunting and monumental work, premiered in 1945 in the Opera House basement to the distant sound of gunfire.
