Programme Note

A devout Catholic, Antonin Dvořák wrote his Mass in D from March to June 1887 writing 'I pay no heed to the whole world – I am working hard at the new Mass and taking delight in God’s natural realm.' The resulting work is a prayerful setting of the Mass reflecting Dvorak's love of nature and the tranquility of the countryside. The concert will also feature English polyphony by Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, The Lamb and The Tyger by William Blake set to music by John Tavener and Arvo Part's dramatic setting of The Beatitudes.
