Programme Note
Daniel Tong has previously featured in our concerts, and he makes a welcome return, this time as pianist of the London Bridge Trio with two other favourite performers Ben Hancox and Cara Berridge, members of the Sacconi Quartet. They present two of the most popular works in the repertoire, but begin with a novelty.
Liszt wrote his symphonic poem Orpheus in 1853 and just over half a century later, Saint-Saëns arranged it for piano trio, preserving the essential qualities of the work while making it completely idiomatic as chamber music.
Dvořák’s Dumky Trio of 1891 marks a departure from the usual forms of chamber music. The dumka originated in the Ukraine and is a heroic lament with alternating slow and fast sections. Dvořák presents a sequence of six dumky in succession, making a varied and life-affirming masterpiece from this unusual construction.
Schubert competed his Trio in B flat major in the last year of his life as part of his ambitious plan to write a series of chamber works challenging Beethoven’s pre-eminence in the popular classical genres. The work is an outpouring of sunny expansive lyricism, belying Schubert’s personal circumstances at the time of writing.
