Tango 44
Programme Note
Relive the early days of tango in Buenos Aires with the sensational Tango 44 Come and listen to our blend of the moving, heart stopping Argentine dance music live in the stunning setting of St Mary le Strand in London
Tango is passion, tango is nostalgia, tango is the allure of Buenos Aires; the danger of porteño knife fights, of broken hearts, and of the dance that exemplifies it. Born from the collision of Italian immigrant labour with local mestizo traditions tango is one of the great dance forms on earth, alongside a century-long treasure trove of passionate music. Most of the Golden Age tango is unknown outside of Argentina itself.
Tango came of age as a worldwide phenomenon in the person of one extraordinary man:Astor Piazzolla. Initially an outcast from his homeland, Piazzolla blended New York jazz, Argentine música folclórica and tango, creating Tango Nuevo – a new style of dance music to which people had to sit and listen! With his death in 1992 a tidal wave of Latin passion was unleashed, sweeping the world as converts were drawn into the power and lyricism of his unforgettable music.
