Programme Note
A feast of vocal music by Henry Purcell and his contemporaries, performed by Charpentier Ensemble as part of celebrations marking the 90th anniversary of the consecration of St. Mary Magdalen Church. The programme highlights the breadth of Purcell's creative genius, from the stunning Passacaglia 'How happy the lover' (King Arthur), through intimate solos and duets to the wonderful Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in G minor. Also included is a relatively rare performance of William Turner's exquisite Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A major.
Charpentier Ensemble (director: Alexander Norman) is formed of singers mostly local to the West Midlands, some of whom also sing with such ensembles as Ex Cathedra, the Choir of Holy Trinity Church Coventry and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir.
There will be an interval, with refreshments provided.
